East Sussex LDC run a PASS scheme for dentist in East Sussex, Brighton and Hove. PASS Schemes offer support and mentoring to colleagues in difficulty with the aim of resolving issues before the need for formal investigation. Most dentists work to a very high standard but occasionally their performance may significantly fall below the accepted level. There are many reasons why this has may happen; illness, personal problems, work overload, isolation and substance abuse are all common issues
The GDC and BDA has supported this “practitioners supporting practitioner “approach.
Support is offered to all dentists in East Sussex and ranges from simple telephone advice to practice visits.
Discussion of problems at an early stage with colleagues who understand the dentist’s point of view and circumstances can be invaluable. With the support that PASS can arrange or coordinate involvement with a more formal resolution may be avoided.
The support that PASS provides is completely confidential. It is important to understand that PASS can only help those who recognise that they need support and are open to change if necessary.
With the support that PASS can arrange or coordinate, involvement with a more formal resolution may be avoided. We adhere to the Caldecott guidelines on confidentiality., subject to our obligation to refer on where there are patient safety issues, or a crime may have been committed.
The GDC suggests that a PASS is open and easily accessible and has processes which are clearly defined and documented. Matters will be dealt with promptly and objectively and members have appropriate training.
Action will be taken to protect the public if necessary and there are procedures for reviewing the scheme’s work. There is also a procedure by which dentists supported by the scheme can raise concerns or make complaints about their experience.

Dentists’ Benevolent Fund
The BDA Benevolent Fund is an independent charity working for dentists – both past and present – to ensure that dentists do not go unsupported in times of crisis.
Every year they help people of all ages who are in serious financial need as a result of illness, accident, or other adversity. The Benevolent Fund provides grants, personal interest-free loans and occasionally financial support with career transition.
Run by dentists, for dentists, the Benevolent Fund has been working at the heart of the dental profession for over 130 years. All requests are considered in confidence.
